As HTTP is a stateless protocol, a number of solutions have been proposed in the past years to try to allow data to persist during a visitor's stay on a web site. While many of these proposals have disappeared over time because they were inadequate or just plain ludicrous, two remain - sessions and cookies - and these are the subject of our next chapter.
